Did you know that estrogen plays a major role in maintaining bone health?
1. Estrogen directly suppresses the activity of osteoclasts (the cells that breakdown bone).
2. Estrogen has a positive effect on osteoblasts (the cells that build bone) and stimulates production of growth factors that support bone formation.
3. Estrogen reduces the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines that stimulate osteoclast activity. Lower inflammation equals less bone resorption.
This means that with the decrease in estrogen during perimenopause your bones break down faster, increasing the risk for osteoporosis as you get older.
The BEST medical treatment for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis is ESTROGEN.
That being said, the sad truth is most practitioners do not offer hormone treatments to women until they have gone one full year without a period. Peak bone loss happens TWO YEARS before women lose their period. This leaves them with on average three years of bone loss before ever touching a treatment- not to mention all the other life-altering symptoms that women experience during perimenopause.
