Why are some women applying estrogen to their face?
It’s not just a trend- it’s a treatment backed by decades of scientific research. Women are applying topical estrogen to their skin to counteract the changes caused by hormonal shifts, particularly during menopause. Using estrogen to improve skin quality isn’t new, however. Topical estrogen creams have been prescribed for over twenty years, with early studies in the 1990s demonstrating a clear ability to improve skin thickness, hydration and elasticity. Here’s why:
Estrogen and skin:
Estrogen is essential for maintaining youthful, healthy skin. It boost collagen production, keeping the skin firm and elastic (think sag and wrinkle-prevention!), and increases natural production of hyaluronic acid, locking in hydration. Estrogen also helps to regulate the production of melanin, contributing to even skin tone.
What happens during menopause?
During menopause, estrogen levels drop significantly, leading to dramatic changes in the skin. Collagen production slows, causing skin to thin and lose its elasticity. Hydration levels also decrease, leading to dry and dull skin, and uneven pigmentation. In fact, women can lose up to 30% of their skin’s collagen within the first FIVE years of menopause!
